Germany and Fiji: Bilateral relations

04.10.2024 - Article

The Federal Republic of Germany and Fiji have maintained diplomatic relations since 1 August 1973. On 19 August 2023, Germany opened an Embassy in Suva, Fiji. Federal Foreign Minister Baerbock visited the country in May 2024.

Germany and Fiji share common interests in combatting the climate crisis. Both are committed to a high level of ambition in international climate negotiations. In 2017, the UN Climate Change Conference COP23 was jointly organised by Fiji and Germany, taking place in Bonn under the Presidency of Fiji. Fiji is a member of the Group of Friends on Climate and Security in the United Nations, founded by Germany and Nauru.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has an office in the capital Suva. It coordinates projects promoted by German development cooperation in the region, such as a regional programme on adaptation to climate change and regional projects promoting the protection of biodiversity in oceans and coastal areas. Germany has expanded its cooperation on curbing the impacts of climate change in Fiji and the region.

Close cooperation is also fostered through themed visits and workshops for representatives of Fiji institutions in Germany focusing, for example, on freedom of the media.

Germany supports Fiji’s development through its contributions to the European Union’s Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI) – known as the European Development Fund (EDF) until 2021 – and implements microprojects in the spheres of infrastructure, education and vocational training, as well as health, the advancement of women and combating domestic violence.

Bilateral trade relations are modest. Imports to Germany were worth 2.114 million euro in 2023, while German exports totalled 24.79 million euro (Federal Statistical Office figures).
