Relations between Germany and Haiti have traditionally been good, but they have become less intense as a consequence of the complicated political situation in Haiti.

The two countries work together closely within the United Nations and other international bodies. For example, they both advocate reform of the United Nations Security Council.

Germany has provided considerable humanitarian assistance to directly help the people affected by the natural disasters of the past ten years, such as the earthquakes in 2010 and 2021 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

Haiti also benefits from German development cooperation in the regional context. This focuses above all on the protection of resources and food security in the border region between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Since 2010, a total of more than 100 million euro has been made available bilaterally.

Germany has supported the democratisation process in Haiti for many years and contributes to the country’s stabilisation and development, also in cooperation with numerous German non‑governmental organisations active in the country. In addition, Germany contributes to projects and the UN missions in Haiti through the EU and the United Nations budget.

German support for Haitian non‑governmental organisations aims to protect human rights, strengthen civil society, provide political stability, and set up a state based on the rule of law.
