A peace agreement is more stable and more sustainable when women have a say in the settlement of conflicts. That is why the Federal Foreign Office, together with the United Nations, supports women worldwide who are committed to resolving conflicts and promoting peace.
The international conference Global Women’s Forum for Peace & Humanitarian Action, which will be hosted by the Federal Foreign Office and the UN Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) from 23 to 25 May, will focus on the importance of women for resolving and preventing conflicts and will bring together representatives of nearly 90 NGOs from 29 countries across all continents, with representatives from civil society, politics and think tanks.
Women are shaping a self-determined future
The equality, participation and protection of women are integral parts of a foreign and security policy that takes into account the lives of all people in crisis zones and conflict regions. The international meeting of women’s initiatives from countries like Ethiopia, Iraq, Nigeria and Colombia is therefore a good example of feminist foreign policy in action. The participants are women who work in their local areas to ensure that refugees are given prospects again, that victims of sexual violence receive the attention they need as well as legal support and medical care and that marginalised groups are given access to humanitarian assistance. They are involved in formal or informal peace negotiations and in the prevention of violent conflicts. Once fighting has ended, they promote reconciliation, peace and the economic recovery of a village or region.
