Germany and Lebanon: Bilateral relations

02.01.2024 - Article

Germany is the third-largest donor to Lebanon after the US and the EU, funding humanitarian assistance, development cooperation, stabilisation, human rights work, culture and civil society, and capacity-building. Germany is a member of the International Support Group for Lebanon and, along with like-minded partners, is advocating for fundamental reforms to tackle the ongoing economic and financial crisis. The aim is the conclusion of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund. Together with international partners, Germany is also committed to ensuring the investigation of the devastating explosion in the port of Beirut in August 2020. Owing to the disastrous economic and financial crisis, GDP and international trade have seen a drastic fall. Germany remains the seventh-largest importer in Lebanon. Principal import goods include motor vehicles (36%) and chemical products (21%). The German Chamber of Commerce in Cairo also looks after Lebanon.

Cultural, academic and scientific relations are fostered not only by the German Embassy and the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), which is currently working at two excavation sites, but also by the Goethe-Institut, the Orient-Institut Beirut and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) from its office in Amman. There are two schools in Greater Beirut that attach great importance to teaching German as a foreign language.
