Germany and Samoa traditionally have close relations. Diplomatic relations were established in 1972 and are conducted by the German embassy in Wellington, New Zealand. Germany is represented by an honorary consul in the Samoan capital Apia.

Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Katja Keul visited Samoa in July 2024.

Bilateral trade between Germany and Samoa is modest. According to Federal Statistical Office figures, Germany exported goods worth 515,000 euro to Samoa in 2023 and imported goods worth 239,000 euro from the country.

Germany supports the development of Samoa through its contributions to the EU’s Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI) – previously, until 2021, the European Development Fund (EDF).

Samoa is a member of the Group of Friends on Climate and Security in the United Nations, founded by Germany and Nauru.

Germany is involved in Samoa by supporting microprojects at municipal level. This primarily takes the form of aid projects for the improvement of sanitary facilities and hygienic standards at schools and the prevention of domestic violence, as well as the form of projects on education and sustainability and a German film and cultural festival at a total of five schools.

Furthermore, Germany is supporting the National Archives of Samoa in capacity-building for the digitisation and conservation of historical collections, and is funding a project between the Übersee-Museum Bremen and the National University of Samoa to create a virtual Oceania exhibition.
