Germany and St. Vincent and the Grenadines: Bilateral relations

31.10.2024 - Article

Political relations between Germany and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are amicable and untroubled. Cooperation takes place mainly in the form of individual development and cultural projects and within the United Nations framework.

The scale of bilateral economic relations with Germany is modest. The volume of imports and exports in both directions is small. Additional revenue from Germany is generated by tourists (especially cruise ship tourists).

A bilateral investment protection and promotion agreement has been in place since 1989. In 2011 a bilateral agreement on exchange of information on tax matters entered into force. Other cooperation and trade accords exist within the framework of the agreements between the European Union and the ACP (Africa, Caribbean, Pacific) states as well as between the EU and CARIFORUM (CARICOM member states plus the Dominican Republic). Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the states of the Caribbean hope that the EU’s new partnership agreement with the states of Africa, the Pacific and the Caribbean (Post‑Cotonou or Samoa Agreement) will bring a further intensification of relations with the EU.

In development cooperation, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has indirect links with Germany through regional projects between Germany and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) that focus on sustainable economic development, the promotion of renewable energy, adaptation to climate change and fostering biodiversity. In addition, Germany provides assistance in the region through micro-projects. Following the volcanic eruption in April 2020 and Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, Germany provided humanitarian assistance.

Germany supports the CARICOM states in their efforts to combat the proliferation of small arms through the Caribbean Firearms Roadmap. St. Vincent and the Grenadines benefits from the Federal Foreign Office’s Training for International Diplomats programme, with diplomats from the country regularly being invited to participate in its courses.
