On 8 December 2024, opposition and Islamist groups including the Islamist militia Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) toppled the government of President Bashar al-Assad. These groups now control large parts of the country, including the governorates of Idlib, Hama, Homs, Latakia, Tartus, Damascus, Suweida and Deraa.
The north-east continues to be controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). However, the situation remains volatile and may change at any time.
Currently, not all the usual country information is available for Syria.
