Welcome
Germany and Uzbekistan: Bilateral relations
Germany and Uzbekistan have maintained diplomatic relations since 1992. Germany has an embassy in Tashkent. Regular consultation formats are in place that focus on political, economic and cultural cooperation between Germany and Uzbekistan. This cooperation was expanded following reciprocal visits by the two heads of state in 2019. A strategic regional partnership between Germany and Central Asia was established in September 2023 at a meeting between the five Central Asian presidents and the Federal Chancellor. In September 2024, the Federal Chancellor travelled to Uzbekistan, where he met with the President and various other interlocutors.
Germany is an increasingly important economic partner for Uzbekistan, ranking seventh among Uzbekistan’s trading partners in 2023. In the same year, the volume of bilateral trade rose significantly to 1.2 billion euro. Germany supports and advises Uzbekistan in its efforts to liberalise the economy.
Due to the realignment of Germany’s development cooperation under the 2030 reform strategy of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Uzbekistan will in the future be the only recipient of bilateral state development cooperation in Central Asia. Development cooperation between Germany and Uzbekistan has been significantly expanded since 2022. Cooperation focuses on sustainable economic development, training and employment, health, social security, peace and social cohesion, as well as climate and energy, and the transition to a low-carbon economy. For the first time, Uzbekistan received a policy-based loan from Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW); this is a loan that is tied to certain reforms.
