Humanitarian Situation

  • According to the United Nations, Yemen is home to one of the world’s most serious humanitarian crises, which has escalated repeatedly since the beginning of the conflict in Yemen in March 2015.
  • Of Yemen’s approximately 34 million inhabitants, 18.2 million people are dependent on humanitarian assistance in 2024, of whom 23 percent are women and 53 percent are children.
  • 17.6 million people are affected by food insecurity while 49 percent have no access to clean drinking water and 70 percent of the country’s children have not been given fundamental vaccinations.
  • The number of internally displaced persons stands at around 4.5 million. Moreover, Yemen was a country of reception and, in particular, of transit for around 90,000 refugees in 2023, including from Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti.

System of government: Constitutional presidential system

Head of State: President Abdrabu Mansour Hadi (elected as Interim President on 21 February 2012); President Hadi has resided in Saudi Arabia since the end of March 2015 owing to the hostilities in Yemen.

Head of Government: Prime Minister Ahmed Bin Mubarak (since 5 February 2024)

Foreign Minister: Shaya Mohsin Zindani (since 27 March 2024)

  • 24 October 1962 (between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen)
  • 19 December 1967 (between the Federal Republic of Germany and the People’s Republic of South Yemen (South Yemen)
  • 21 December 1972 (between the German Democratic Republic and the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen)
  • 10 July 1969 (between the German Democratic Republic and the People’s Republic of South Yemen (South Yemen)
