Foreign Minister Westerwelle: Violence in Côte d’Ivoire must be stopped
Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle has again expressed his concern at the violent clashes in Côte d’Ivoire. He issued the following statement in Berlin today (11 March):
“I am very concerned at the news of the clashes in Côte d’Ivoire which are akin to civil war.
This violence must end immediately.
I urge all sides to stop the fighting.
President Gagbo, who failed to win re-election, must at last clear the way for his elected successor.
We support the mediation efforts of the African Union and the West African regional organization ECOWAS. Every effort must be made to bring them to a successful conclusion.”
