Minister of State Pieper on Macky Sall’s victory in Senegal’s peaceful presidential run‑off
Minister of State Cornelia Pieper said she was pleased with the manner in which the presidential election run‑off was conducted, making a peaceful handover of power possible. In Beijing, China, she issued the following statement today (26 March):
“I welcome the peaceful and democratic conduct of the second round of Senegal’s presidential election.
My congratulations go out to newly elected president Macky Sall. I wish him every success in carrying out the important tasks that lie ahead.
Germany will be a reliable partner for Senegal.”
Yesterday, Sunday (March 3), Macky Sall won the second round of Senegal’s presidential elections with two-thirds of the vote. Abdoulaye Wade conceded defeat on election evening and congratulated the new president.
The campaign leading up the presidential elections had been overshadowed by clashes. Abdoulaye Wade’s candidacy for a third term had sparked political controversy.
