Foreign Minister Steinmeier on arson attack in Brandenburg an der Havel
Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin on 27 July on the arson attack on a refugee apartment in Brandenburg an der Havel:
We still do not know who was responsible for the cowardly attack on the apartment of a family of refugees from Ingushetia. This is not the first arson attack on refugee homes and not the only one to take place in Germany this week, however.
I am appalled that the perpetrators are willing to risk the lives of many people in their arson attacks on apartments in order to express their xenophobic stance. It was only with great fortune that a disaster was avoided in Brandenburg.
We must show the threatened family that they can live in our society in security and that we are firmly opposed to all forms of xenophobia.
