The fighting in the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray is extremely concerning. The parties involved must act immediately to lay down their weapons and open a dialogue.

The offers already made to mediate in the conflict, primarily by the African Union and its current chair South Africa, must be accepted. Otherwise, the danger is that the existing divisions within Ethiopia will deepen and the conflict will escalate, potentially spilling over into neighbouring countries. It is therefore essential that all of the forces in Ethiopia’s regions work to quickly pacify the situation and preserve the country’s unity.

Only a united Ethiopia can offer its people peace, prosperity and development. The reforms begun by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed must not be permitted to fail.
