Welcome
Statement by a Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson on attacks by Iran on the Region of Kurdistan-Iraq
The Federal Government condemns the Iranian attacks in northern Iraq. The drone and missile attacks in the Sulaymaniyah and Erbil provinces of the Region of Kurdistan-Iraq have been under way for several days now. The escalation by Iran, which according to reports has already resulted in nine people being killed and many others injured, is not acceptable. We grieve with the families and friends of those who have lost their lives in the attacks, and we wish those who have been injured a rapid recovery.
Against the backdrop of the protests in Iran itself, we view Iran’s attacks on the Region of Kurdistan-Iraq with great concern. We categorically reject attempts to state that the causes for the protests in Iran lie with its neighbour. We call upon Iran to respect the territorial integrity of Iraq and to cease the attacks immediately.
As a close partner of Iraq and the Region of Kurdistan-Iraq, we will continue to work to strengthen the sovereignty of Iraq and preserve its unity and stability in the fight against Daesh. The joint progress made in recent years must not fall victim to the escalation now being triggered by Iran
