Right now, people are being evacuated from their hometowns due to extreme forest fires. Extreme heat waves with record temperatures are sweeping over Europe, North America and parts of Asia such as China. These are just a couple of examples of the devastating impacts of the climate crisis that are already disrupting our livelihoods. In light of these dramatic developments, continuing as before is not an option. We need a step change, not business as usual. As a global community we need to step up our joint efforts to tackle the climate crisis. That’s why I’m going to the G20 Ministerial in Chennai to work on an ambitious and effective outcome and to discuss with Ministers how we can accelerate the global just transition. As large economies, the G20 have a special responsibility to lead the way and protect the world from even more dire consequences of the climate crisis. To achieve this, the G20 must agree on joint ambitious climate action, such as phasing out of fossil fuels and setting an ambitious global target for renewable energy and a doubling of energy efficiency improvements. At the meeting in Chennai I will do my part to bring the urgency of the climate crisis into the room.
