Statement by Minister of State Tobias Lindner prior to his trip to Uruguay and Peru
Minister of State Tobias Lindner issued the following statement today (13 September 2023) prior to his trip to Uruguay and Peru:
Before attending the UN General Assembly this week, I will visit two key partner countries in Latin America to discuss how we can work together to overcome current global challenges more effectively. Only through cooperation can we succeed in tackling the climate crisis, sustainably transforming our economies and strengthening the rules-based global order. Latin America and Europe are close partners on the global stage. Nowhere else in the world are there so many democracies as there are on our two continents. In the fields of politics, culture, research and science we have reliable and like-minded partners in Latin America.
In these difficult times, marked by crises and political and societal upheaval, it is particularly important for us to support one another and intensify our cooperation on issues of common concern.
Background information:
Minister of State Lindner is travelling to Uruguay for political talks on 14 September and then on to Peru from 15 to 17 September.
The talks, which will take place at the Foreign Ministry in Montevideo, will centre on bilateral relations in the areas of business, science and culture as well as dialogue on global, regional and multilateral issues. Special attention will be given to expanding cooperation on renewable energies and green hydrogen as well as other projects focusing on climate and environmental protection. A visit to the port of Montevideo, which is strategically important for expanding hydrogen cooperation, is also on the agenda.
In Peru, Minister of State Lindner will hold talks at the Foreign Ministry and travel to the Amazon region, among other things. Global, regional and multilateral foreign policy issues will be the focus of the political talks. Peru and Germany plan to further intensify their cooperation, particularly in the fields of business and climate protection, on the basis of the existing bilateral climate and raw materials partnership.
