Welcome
Statement by Human Rights Commissioner Luise Amtsberg prior to her visit to Israel, the Palestinian territories and Jordan
The brutal terror attack by Hamas on 7 October 2023 was a turning point in the history of the conflict. Israel has the right and the duty to protect its population within the parameters of international law from further suffering caused by the terrorists. At the same time, Israel’s fight against Hamas must take into account the protection of the civilian population in Gaza. Here, too, Israel has the duty to prevent even greater suffering among the Palestinian civilian population.
The aim of my visit is to hold talks with stakeholders from civil society and politics, primarily to listen carefully and to understand their views on the current situation and the prerequisites for a peaceful future for all. Particularly at times like this, it is vital to maintain and strengthen space for talks on all sides.
Furthermore, I will focus in particular on access for humanitarian assistance in Gaza to support the German Government’s intensive shuttle diplomacy. It is important that the conflict does not spread to the West Bank ‒ the situation of the people there will also be a topic during my trip. In Jordan, my aim is to speak with an important partner in the region about further humanitarian support for the people in Gaza and to hold talks with Palestinians who have lived in Jordan for years or decades.
