Welcome
Minister of State Annen to travel to Central America and Mexico
A month after the inaugural conference of the Latin America Initiative, Minister of State Niels Annen is to travel to the region. From 1 to 4 July, he will visit Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras and Mexico.
During talks in Nicaragua with government and opposition representatives, as well as with the Apostolic Nuncio and the OAS, Minister of State Annen will call for the resumption of the national dialogue process. In El Salvador he will meet representatives of the new government for an initial exchange. The political talks in El Salvador and Honduras will focus in particular on the migration crisis and the “Integral Development Plan for Central America” (CEPAL). In Mexico, the Minister of State will meet the Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, give a speech at the celebrations marking the 50th jubilee of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung office, and sign a declaration of intent on expanding bilateral cooperation in the field of vocational education.
Prior to his departure, Minister of State Annen said:
My visit to three countries in Central America and to Mexico comes at an exciting time. The countries of Latin America are facing very different, far-reaching challenges: internal security, the erosion of the international order, increased migration from south to north, and the growing isolationism of the United States. The aim of the Federal Foreign Minister’s Latin America Initiative is to combine forces across the Atlantic and strengthen the multilateral order. This means that we want to work more closely together on the broadest possible basis. But it also means that we will offer our support wherever we can be of help.
