Welcome
Statement by the Federal Foreign Office on the situation in Burkina Faso
The violent coup by parts of the armed forces represents a serious blow to the constitution of Burkina Faso and the democracy that the country’s people achieved in 2015. The military must return to their barracks and to the constitutional order and avoid further escalation. This includes the immediate release of the democratically elected President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré as well as all individuals detained in this context.
Germany has stood by the people of Burkina Faso for over 60 years. We will evaluate and adjust our further cooperation with the country in the interests of its people.
Background information:
On 24 January 2022, elements of the armed forces in Burkina Faso arrested President Kaboré of Burkina Faso and suspended the constitution. The country’s Government and National Assembly were dissolved and a nighttime curfew was imposed. The country’s borders have been closed until further notice and mobile internet services have been interrupted.
Germany and Burkina Faso are linked in a host of different ways. The two countries have been cooperating closely for decades. Burkina Faso is, among other things, a partner country of German development cooperation. In recent years, the country, like much of the Sahel region, has been increasingly affected by terrorism while humanitarian crises in the region are on the rise.
