Senegal is a country with a democratic tradition that has been built up over the course of many decades. We therefore welcome President Sall’s declaration that he recognises the decision of the Senegalese Constitutional Council and now wants to initiate consultations without delay and pave the way for elections as soon as possible.

The Senegalese Government has a responsibility to fulfil the expectations of its people with respect to presidential elections in the near future as well as an inclusive, fair and transparent electoral process. This includes, in particular, upholding fundamental rule of law principles such as the freedom of expression and the freedom of assembly.

Against this backdrop, we also welcome the release of opposition members who were arrested as part of the protests against the postponement of the elections.“
