The High Level Conference on the Lake Chad Region will take place at the Federal Foreign Office on 3 4 September 2018, co hosted by Germany, Nigeria, Norway and the United Nations. The Conference will focus on key issues relating to humanitarian assistance, stabilisation and development cooperation in the region.
Foreign Minister Heiko Maas will open the conference at 10.15 a.m. on 3 September together with the co hosts and representatives from the Lake Chad states, and will underscore Germany’s support for the region. The two day event will be attended by the hosts and government ministers from the Lake Chad region countries, as well as international partners and representatives of regional and UN organisations, including OCHA’s Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock and UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner. The second day of the conference (4 September) will concentrate on exchange with civil society.
The Lake Chad region, where the borders of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon converge, is the scene of one of Africa’s biggest humanitarian crises. The Islamist group Boko Haram continues to terrorise the population. 2.3 million people have been displaced within their home countries, more than 200,000 have crossed borders in their plight, and more than 10 million people are reliant on humanitarian aid.
