Foreign Minister Maas on the attacks in Halle
Foreign Minister Heiko Maas gave the following statement today (9 October) on the attacks in Halle:
I am shocked and horrified by the attacks that were perpetrated in Halle today, on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. I’m tired of having to express shock and horror time and again. When will this end? Why is this happening in our country? Two innocent people were brutally murdered – what a horrible, pointless loss of life. I hope the perpetrators will soon be arrested, and that the background of this despicable act will be thoroughly investigated. Antisemitism and xenophobia must have no place in our society. It is shameful to have to repeat this sentence so often in Germany. And it is unbearable that the Jewish community has been exposed to such an attack on its holiest day. In Germany, in 2019! I convey my hearfelt condolences to the victims’ families and to all those who have been affected.
