Statement by Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on the start of the 75th UN General Assembly in New York

18.09.2020 - Press release

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas issued the following statement on the start of the 75th UN General Assembly in New York:

Although we cannot meet in person at the UN General Assembly in New York this year because of the COVID‑19 pandemic, we are nevertheless using this as an opportunity to advance issues that are important to us. These include multilateralism, a rules‑based international order, disarmament and cooperative conflict resolution, including in Yemen and Libya. No country – no matter how large – can master these global challenges on its own. The COVID‑19 pandemic has made this painfully clear. At our invitation, the Foreign Ministers of the Alliance for Multilateralism will meet again this Friday. More than 60 states want to join us in the Alliance to work together to get to grips with the pressing issues of our time. That is most urgent in the healthcare sphere, but it also applies to other global tasks such as cyber security, equality and climate change mitigation.
