The Republic of Moldova is Ukraine’s smallest neighbour and, since Russia’s brutal attack on Ukraine, has experienced the largest influx of refugees per capita. Moldova needs our support in this situation.

We see our task in standing alongside Moldova and helping the country to cope with the additional challenges presented by the current refugee crisis with international partners and in a spirit of solidarity. To this end, the German Government, together with France and Romania, has established the Moldova Support Platform. This is a flexible international platform dedicated to strengthening Moldova’s resilience and stability in the short and medium term in consultation with Moldova itself, for the current crisis and beyond.

The German Government plans to hold a support conference at ministerial level to launch the Platform. The conference will focus on meeting the immediate needs of refugees in Moldova and facilitating the rapid distribution of refugees to other countries. At the same time, it will strive to set in motion schemes to provide financial assistance for Moldova as well as to provide support in the areas of energy security, the rule of law and border protection.

The conference will take place in Berlin on 5 April at the invitation of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
