Welcome
Federal Foreign Office on the release of Dr Moncef Kartas
A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement today (21 May 2019) on the release of German-Tunisian UN expert Dr Moncef Kartas from detention in Tunisia:
We are very relieved that Dr Moncef Kartas was released from detention in Tunisia today. We had worked hard to achieve this together with the UN. The immunity of UN staff and experts is vital to the functioning of the multilateral order and must be respected universally.
We also made it quite clear in the Security Council once again today that monitoring the arms embargo on Libya is of central importance. The ongoing infringements of the embargo are leading to a further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
Background information:
Ambassador Schulz spoke today in the open debate of the UN Security Council on Libya about the arms embargo and the Kartas case. We will be happy to make the wording of his remarks available should you be interested.
