The Federal Government welcomes the fact that the opposition and Government in Nicaragua are in the process of resuming their talks, which have been suspended since July 2018. Both sides appear to have reached agreement on an agenda for negotiations and the Government has announced the release of detainees. These major steps forward are also thanks to the strong commitment shown by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Holy See.

Great challenges continue to be faced. Civil rights and democracy must be strengthened in the long term, and a reform of electoral law must be elaborated. The people must return to peaceful coexistence following this violent conflict. Germany stands ready to support what is expected to be a lengthy process.
