Checklist for the legalization of Bhutanese documents for use in the Federal Republic of Germany

23.08.2024 - Article

Foreign public documents are often only recognized in German legal transactions (by German authorities or courts) if their authenticity has been confirmed. Bhutanese documents are usually to be presented in a legalized form. Legalization does not confirm the accuracy of the content of the document, but only its authenticity (signature of the person extending the document). Please note that only Bhutanese public documents, certificated copies and electronic documents can be legalized. The documents to be legalized must first be pre-authenticated by the Bhutanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Please contact the Bhutanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs for further information on pre-certification (addresses, opening times, fees). All public documents that have been issued in Bhutan and pre-authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be legalized by the German Embassy in New Delhi. For the legalization of a foreign civil status certificate (birth, marriage, death certificates) and other public documents fees amount to 29.69 EUR. These fees can be paid at the Embassy either in cash in Indian rupees (as per the current exchange rate) or by credit card (VISA, Master Card). Please contact the German Embassy New Delhi in advance to arrange for an appointment for legalization. Alternatively, the certificates can be submitted via our service provider VFS in Thimphu, which will forward them to the German Embassy New Delhi and hand them back to you after legalization.
