The opportunity card entitles you to enter Germany for up to 12 months in order to look for a job there or to carry out measures for the recognition of foreign professional qualifications.

The prerequisite is that your living expenses can be financed for the duration of your stay. During your job search, you can also pursue a part-time job (20 hours per week) or trial work. If you can already provide evidence of a planned part-time job, this can be included in the assessment of the financing of your living expenses.
If you have a German qualification or a foreign vocational or higher education qualification that is deemed equivalent or comparable to German qualifications, you are considered a “skilled worker” in Germany and do not have to meet any special requirements in addition to financing your living expenses.

However, even without an equivalent or comparable qualification, you can obtain an opportunity card under the following conditions:
- You can demonstrate basic knowledge of German (A1)
or
- a good English skills (B2),
and fulfill one of the following three criteria:
- You have a foreign professional qualification which is recognized by the state in the country in which it was obtained and which provides for at least two years of training,
or
- You have a foreign university degree that is recognized by the state in the country in which it was obtained,
or
- You have a vocational qualification from a German Chamber of Foreign Trade which requires training that meets the requirements for a comparable vocational qualification in Germany.
