Germany and San Marino: Bilateral relations
The Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of San Marino have maintained diplomatic relations since 1 October 1995. The German Ambassador to Italy is also accredited to San Marino. San Marino’s Ambassador to Germany (currently Ambassador Galassi, who is also Director of Economic Affairs at the Foreign Ministry) operates from San Marino.
San Marino and Germany work closely together, particularly in the multilateral sphere and in the United Nations. Within the UN system and in the OSCE, San Marino is committed to the global protection of human rights, active peace policy and the worldwide abolition of the death penalty. San Marino is also a member of the International Monetary Fund and the World Tourism Organization.
San Marino ranks 141st among Germany’s trading partners in terms of imports and 131st in terms of exports (as of 2023). Italy accounts for over 80% of San Marino’s volume of trade and is its main partner; with 3% of imports, Germany is in third place. San Marino and Andorra completed their negotiations with the European Commission on the text of EU association agreements in 2023. The agreements have yet to be signed and ratified. An agreement on tax transparency between the EU and San Marino was signed on 8 December 2015 with a view to combating tax evasion, and entered into force at the start of 2017.
