Federal Foreign Office on the death of UN soldiers and government troops in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

16.11.2018 - Press release

A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson today (16 November) issued the following statement on the death yesterday of soldiers from the UN peace mission MONUSCO and the Congolese armed forces

We condemn in the strongest possible terms the perfidious attack on UN blue helmets serving in the MONUSCO peacekeeping mission in North Kivu. According to the United Nations, at least six peacekeepers from Malawi and one peacekeeper from Tanzania as well as fifteen members of the Congolese armed forces were killed.

Our sympathy goes to the families of the victims and to the injured. The courage and commitment with which the 120,000 peacekeepers perform their daily duties in the cause of peace and to protect civilians in crisis and conflict-ridden regions across the world deserve our special recognition.

Background

The MONUSCO (Mission de l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour la Stabilisation en République démocratique du Congo) peacekeeping mission was established by the UN Security Council in 2010. Its mandate includes protecting civilians, stabilising the country and supporting a political transition process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Germany supports the efforts of the international community to promote peaceful development in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
