Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on the current situation in Hungary
In an interview with Spiegel Online, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas expressed the following views on the current situation in Hungary:
The situation is extraordinarily difficult for all EU member states and requires unprecedented measures. Some of the measures taken by governments infringe upon citizens’ fundamental rights. Interventions such as these must only be taken to protect the well-being of the population as a whole. The purpose and scope of such regulations must be strictly limited, with the sole aim being to control the pandemic. It is therefore especially important that any measures are given very careful consideration before they are put in place, and that they are subject to regular scrutiny and monitoring to ensure they are proportionate. Even in these extraordinary times, we must continue to be guided by our fundamental European values. They are the standard by which we all must measure our response to this crisis.
